Engineering Manager Salary in Brazil: 2026 Ranges and Costs

GENTY recruitment··12 min read

An engineering manager in Brazil typically earns between R$25,000 and R$30,000 per month in a local role, which is roughly R$300,000 to R$360,000 per year. Senior managers at top employers reach R$40,000 or more. US companies hiring remotely usually pay above the local market to win the best candidates, and even then the total cost stays well below a comparable US hire. This guide gives you the ranges from several independent data sets, explains why they disagree, and shows how to turn them into an offer for a manager in São Paulo, Florianópolis or Belo Horizonte.

TL;DR

  • Local Brazilian pay for a mid-level engineering manager clusters around R$24,000 to R$30,000 per month in base or total pay, depending on the source.
  • Senior engineering managers sit around R$28,000 to R$44,000 per month, and top local employers pay more through equity and bonuses.
  • Foreign employers pay far more than Brazilian ones: one salary survey shows a 2.3x gap in engineering pay, so a US offer needs to be built against that benchmark, not the local median.
  • Brazil’s main tech hubs work within one to two hours of US Eastern time (four to five from Pacific), so an engineering manager can lead standups, 1:1s and incident response in your working day.
  • Budget with an explicit currency, contract type (CLT or PJ) and total compensation in mind, because the same “salary” can mean three different things.

What engineering managers earn in Brazil in 2026

Published figures differ because they measure different things: base salary, total compensation, permanent employees, or self-reported data from big tech. Here is how the main sources line up, with an illustrative conversion at R$5.50 per US dollar (our own rounding, not a quoted rate, so use today’s rate when you budget).

Read the table as a band, not a point. Most credible local data lands between R$24,000 and R$30,000 per month for a typical engineering manager, with the top quartile and the best-paying employers pulling toward R$40,000. The Michael Page guide is based on a survey of 5,762 professionals and 1,955 companies, which makes its R$25,000 to R$40,000 band a useful planning range for a manager who owns delivery and a team.

A note on the Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo pages that rank in search for this term. Some aggregator pages quote averages near R$20,000 to R$30,000 per year. Those are clearly mis-scaled monthly figures and should not be used as annual salaries.

Salary by seniority: from first-time manager to senior

Title inflation is common, so define the level by scope: team size, whether the manager still codes, and whether they own hiring and delivery.

  • Junior or first-time engineering manager: PayMetric Labs puts this level at around R$18K per month, rising to R$27K at mid-level, R$37K at senior and R$49K at principal or lead level, a 172% climb from entry to lead.
  • Senior engineering manager: Glassdoor’s median total pay is R$38K per month (range R$28K to R$44K), with base pay of R$24K to R$35K and R$4K to R$10K in additional pay. That sample is only 15 submissions, so treat it as directional.
  • Mid-level average: QuickSalaries shows a mid-level average of about R$306,000 per year, or R$25,500 per month before deductions.

If you need someone above this level, such as a director who owns several teams or a VP candidate, the process and pay structure change, and an executive search approach usually fits better than a standard shortlist.

Engineer vs. engineering manager: how big is the jump?

The manager premium over a senior individual contributor is real but smaller than many US teams expect. Portal Salário, using official CAGED data, shows the average software engineer in Brazil at R$14,631 per month, with a range from R$9,592 to R$26,493 across 6,653 professionals. Against the R$24,000 to R$30,000 manager range above, the step up is roughly 65% to 100% from the average engineer, but much narrower against a staff-level or foreign-employed senior engineer.

Monthly salary comparison for Brazilian engineers and managers

That matters for retention. NaGringa.dev reports that senior engineers at foreign companies earn a median of R$35,238 per month, against R$17,456 at Brazilian companies. A strong senior engineer working remotely for a US firm can already out-earn a local engineering manager. If you want to promote from within or hire a first-time manager, your offer has to beat the individual-contributor alternative, not only the local manager benchmark. Our software developer salary guide for Brazil covers 40+ roles if you need to check the engineers who will report to the manager.

How pay differs between São Paulo, Florianópolis and other cities

City matters, but less than in the US, and remote work is flattening it further. PayMetric Labs reports São Paulo at R$30K per month (11% above the national median), Rio de Janeiro at R$28K (+4%), Florianópolis at R$27K (in line), Curitiba at R$26K (-4%) and Belo Horizonte at R$25K (-7%).

Levels.fyi’s June 2026 snapshot of total compensation ranks locations differently, since it captures equity-heavy employers:

For a US company, the practical point is that you are not limited to São Paulo. Florianópolis, Porto Alegre and Curitiba have established tech communities, and managers there often accept offers at or slightly below São Paulo levels. All of these cities are in Brazil’s single main time zone band, so your overlap with US Eastern hours is the same wherever you hire.

What drives engineering manager pay in Brazil

Two managers with the same title can differ by R$10,000 or more per month. These are the factors that explain the spread.

Employer type and location of the employer

Levels.fyi lists Nubank at a median of R$430,402 per year for software engineering managers, ahead of Itaú (R$339,061), BTG Pactual (R$325,921) and Accenture (R$248,885). Fintech and cloud employers set the top of the market. NaGringa.dev adds that engineering pay at foreign companies has a median of R$34,786 per month against R$15,289 at Brazilian companies, a 2.3x gap.

Employer type and location of the employer

Equity and work model

In NaGringa.dev’s engineering data, roles with equity have a median of R$32,194 per month against R$16,000 without. Hybrid roles also pay more than fully in-person ones. If you are a startup that cannot match cash from a large US employer, a clear equity grant is one of the few levers that shifts a candidate’s decision.

Team size and scope

Michael Page Brasil’s Lucas Oggiam says tech salaries grow most when a professional takes on a wider scope of responsibility, and a scarce skill alone does not guarantee a top-of-band salary. In practice, a manager with 4 direct reports and one with 12 carry different planning, 1:1 and delivery loads, and the market prices that.

Domain expertise

Managers with experience in payments, high-availability systems or critical infrastructure command more. This is why our FinTech searches usually price above general SaaS searches. For sector detail, see our fintech salaries in Latin America breakdown.

People leadership quality

Pay bands reward scope, but retention depends on how well a manager leads. Skills such as emotional intelligence for managers matter in cross-border teams, where a manager has to read morale and conflict through video calls and across cultures. When you interview, weigh evidence of coaching, feedback and conflict handling next to technical depth.

CLT, PJ or USD contract: what the number really means

Brazilian salary data mixes three structures, and comparing them without adjusting is the most common budgeting error.

  • CLT (formal employment): the gross monthly salary is what most surveys report. PayMetric Labs estimates that an engineering manager at R$27K gross takes home R$19,767 per month after INSS and IRRF deductions, an effective rate of 26.8%. Employers also carry additional statutory costs on top of gross pay, so confirm the full cost with your employment or payroll partner.
  • PJ (contractor invoicing through a company): contractors invoice a higher gross amount because they cover their own benefits and taxes. This is the usual route for a US startup without a Brazilian entity, typically through a compliant contractor or employer-of-record arrangement.
  • USD contracts: the figure is annual and in dollars, which removes currency risk for the candidate. Most senior candidates in Brazil expect to see this for US employers.

Whichever you pick, write offers with three explicit fields: currency, gross vs net, and whether bonus and equity are inside the number. Brazilian candidates read “R$27K” and “$27K” very differently, and Levels.fyi reports in annual reais while PayMetric Labs reports monthly.

What US companies pay for a Brazil-based engineering manager

The remote market for Brazilian managers sits between local pay and US pay. Some reference points:

  • A remote engineering manager role at Tremendous open to candidates in Brazil lists a base of $250,000 to $300,000 plus equity. That is a top-end example, not a typical offer.
  • Levels.fyi reports Google L6 software engineering managers in Brazil at an average of $195,173 total compensation: $94,659 base, $87,500 in stock per year and $13,014 bonus.
  • US remote benchmarks are higher: Built In gives an average base of $203,385 and total compensation of $229,765, while Applystead reports a median posted base of $215,800 with a middle range of $185,000 to $257,500.

The working rule for a US company: a strong senior manager in Brazil usually costs a fraction of the US remote median, even when you pay a premium over local bands. The R$40,000 to R$65,000 monthly range for senior candidates on foreign contracts is roughly $87,000 to $140,000 per year at the illustrative R$5.50 rate, against a US remote median above $200,000. That gap is the origin of the “up to 40% savings” claim we make across roles, and for engineering managers the saving can be larger. Real totals depend on contract structure and benefits, which our cost to hire in LATAM guide breaks down.

A checklist for setting your offer

  1. Define the scope. Team size, direct reports, whether the manager codes, and ownership of hiring and delivery.
  2. Pick the benchmark band. R$24,000 to R$30,000 per month for a mid-level manager, R$28,000 to R$44,000 for senior.
  3. Decide the contract. CLT through an entity, PJ, or USD through a compliant contractor setup.
  4. Adjust for the foreign-employer premium. Expect candidates to compare you with foreign offers, not local ones.
  5. Add equity or bonus clearly. State whether it is inside or on top of base.
  6. Confirm the overlap. Define the hours the manager must be online, such as 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pacific or a full Eastern-hours day.
  7. Check the current rate. Convert at today’s exchange rate and review the offer annually, since PayMetric Labs reports pay up 6.5% year over year.

Timezone alignment: the practical advantage

Brazil’s main tech hubs sit one hour ahead of US Eastern time during US daylight saving and two hours ahead in winter. Against US Pacific, the difference is four to five hours. For a manager, that means daily standups with US product, live incident response, and 1:1s with both Brazilian and US reports without anyone working at night. A Western-European or Asian hire cannot offer the same overlap. For engineering management, which is a synchronous job built on conversations, this is as valuable as the salary saving.

Our perspective

We see the same pattern on most engineering manager searches for US companies. The local salary median is a poor guide to what you will actually pay, because the best candidates already work for foreign companies and compare every offer with that.
The companies that close fastest define scope first, put the contract type and currency in the first message, and send the candidate a number inside the market band for foreign employers. Candidates respond to clarity about team size, equity and decision rights as much as to base pay.
This is why we run searches with dedicated recruiters per vertical and a skill-first process that is designed to deliver a curated shortlist within 7 days. Salary benchmarking at the start of the search keeps offers realistic, and our 3-month replacement guarantee and fixed-fee pricing mean the cost of the hire is known before you commit.

FAQ

How much does an engineering manager make in Brazil?

Most sources put a typical engineering manager at R$24,000 to R$30,000 per month, or about R$300,000 to R$360,000 per year. Michael Page’s guide lists a band of R$25,000 to R$40,000 per month for software engineering managers. Senior managers and those at fintechs or foreign companies earn more.

How much does a senior engineering manager earn in Brazil?

Glassdoor reports a median total pay of R$38K per month for senior engineering managers, with a range of R$28K to R$44K, though the sample is small. At top employers such as Nubank, total compensation is higher once equity and bonuses are included.

Do engineering managers earn more in São Paulo?

Slightly. PayMetric Labs reports R$30K per month in São Paulo, 11% above the national median, while Florianópolis tops Levels.fyi’s total compensation ranking. For remote roles, the gap between cities narrows because candidates compare you with foreign offers.

Is it cheaper to hire an engineering manager in Brazil than in the US?

Yes, in most cases. US remote engineering managers have a median base above $200,000 in the data cited above, while a Brazilian manager on a foreign contract typically ranges well below that. Your exact saving depends on contract structure, benefits and equity.
